Urban Planning Campaign | Sonnenallee

An urban planning project that aims to transform the Sonnenallee public space into a shared art gallery.

Overview

This project stemmed from an observation: the main road leading to SRH University was designed primarily for vehicles rather than pedestrians, leaving students, commuters, local residents, and tourists feeling stressed and exhausted, reluctant to spend time there — a pattern research links to depression, anxiety, and reduced safety from inadequate lighting. The initial goal was to minimise the stress caused by the urban environment and provide a quick mood boost during commutes.

The design concept challenges the idea that appreciating art requires you to stop and actively engage with it, instead integrating art into the existing flow of pedestrian traffic to create a "24/7, stress-free, fluid haven."

The solution is an open, accessible mesh installation in Baker-Miller Pink — shown in studies to alleviate tension and lower heart rate — paired with a fin-like structure that lets passers-by take in the artwork's message without stopping, transforming a corridor people usually rush through into a space of quiet calm.
